Although Led Zeppelin disbanded in 1980, they have continued their presence as a rock legend around the world. Their fan base is huge, their music is still selling, and merchandise is one of the most popular of all the rock bands.
Apart from their music, Led Zeppelin images also have a firm place in rock history. The band’s contribution to the image of rock music as portrayed through their posters and record covers was monumental. Led Zeppelin took rock and blues music to new heights, and also captured the imagination of a generation with their unique art.
Led Zeppelin had a relatively short career, but an extremely successful one. They formed in 1968 in the UK. The bands abrupt ending came on September 25, 1980. On that date, John Bonham, the talented drummer, died from choking on his own vomit following a heavy drinking session. His death was found to be accidental, but concluded the reign of music’s greatest heavy metal band.
During their 12 years in the world spotlight, Led Zeppelin made an enormous impact on the music scene, and were recognized for many historic achievements. These are a few of their notable achievements:
- They sold an estimated 200 million albums worldwide, including 111 million in the United States.
- In 1973 they broke the Beatles record of 1965, when they played to 57,000 fans in Tampa Florida.
- In 1999 the RIAA announced the Led Zeppelin were only the third act ever to achieve four or more Diamond albums.
- They are ranked number 1 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.
- Rolling Stone magazine described them as “the biggest band of the 70’s” and “the heaviest band of all time”.
- In 2004 Led Zeppelin were ranked at number 14 on the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time”, by Rolling Stone Magazine.
- In November 2006, they were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame.
- In 2005 they received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
- In July 2009, Robert Plant was awarded a CBE for “Services to Music” by Prince Charles. This followed the OBE awarded to Jimmy Page some four years earlier.
Probably the defining time of Led Zeppelin was in the early seventies with the release of the Fourth Album. This album rocketed them to stardom. On that album was the song that is probably one of the most well know tracks of all time, “Stairway to Heaven”. These are some things to note about that album:
- The cover had no indication of a title or the name of the band. It was referred to as “The Fourth Album”.
- The album is one of the best selling albums in history, and has sold over 23 million copies in the United States. That is more than all of the combined album sales of The Rolling Stones.
- Although it was never released as an album, the track “Stairway to Heaven” is quoted as being the most requested and most played track on radio.
- In 2005, Guitar World Magazine’s readers voted “Stairway to Heaven” as having the best guitar solo of all time.
Since Led Zeppelin disbanded in 1980, their popularity has continued to grow. Their music is destined to live on for generations.
